Jerry Blevins reassigned to minors, tells Mets he will report to alternate site

Veteran lefty Jerry Blevins had said this spring that it was the Mets or nothing, that he was prepared to retire if he did not make the team because he doesn't want to pitch anywhere else.

Well, Blevins was told this weekend that he didn't make the Opening Day roster…but fear not, Mets fans, as he will indeed be reporting to the alternate site in Brooklyn to continue his career.

Blevins, 37, was with the Mets from 2015-18, before moving to Atlanta in 2019. He did not pitch last season after the Giants released him during the spring. He signed a minor-league deal with the Mets this winter and turned in a good spring, but it wasn't enough to win a spot.

Still, Blevins, who has a 3.54 ERA in 609 games over 13 seasons with four teams, believes he can contribute when called upon.

"I still have that want. I want to win a World Series. Literally the only team I would have come back for is the Mets," Blevins said earlier this spring. "My body still feels great. I still have analytics that say my stuff is still the same, so I'm still there, I still have that drive. And then the perfect storm of having a chance to come to New York, where my family loved it, where my first son was born, and they're a World Series competitor. So it's going to be tough to make this team, but I still feel like I have an opportunity to do that."

Blevins' reassignment, along with the Mets' other moves to option Stephen Tarpley and reassign Arodys Vizcaino the Alternate Site, leave the final bullpen spots to Robert Gsellman and Jacob Barnes, the latter of whom worked as an opener ahead of Joey Lucchesi last week in a possible preview of how the Mets will fill their fifth rotation spot while Carlos Carrasco is out.
