As rumors continue to swirl about Pete Alonso potentially being traded, Jerry Recco believes the leaky faucet of information is nothing more than the two sides trying to gain leverage in negotiations that will ultimately end with the homegrown star staying in Queens.
"The more I read about this, the more I believe that all of this is a negotiation ploy by both sides, specifically the Mets," Jerry said. "The Mets want Pete Alonso back, but they don't want to give him a nine or 10-year contract…the Mets don't want to be one of those teams locked into that deal with a guy who is gonna be 30 years old in a year.
"But you also would understand if you're Alonso, 'Hey, I'm the premier power hitter along with Judge and Ohtani. Why am I only getting a five or six-year deal?'"
Alonso is one of the best power hitters in the game, though the Mets are looking ahead to 2025 and 2026, with Alonso becoming a free agent after next season. Still, Jerry believes Alonso will be a part of the Mets' long-term plans.
"I do believe Pete Alonso will be here for the long haul, and this is all a negotiation tactic," Jerry said. "It's a shame it's come out like this."
