Jerry Recco: Pete Alonso giving Mets 'next to nothing' in big spots this season

Joe Benigno and Jerry Recco filled in for Boomer and Gio on Monday morning, and the two discussed the suddenly uncertain future of Pete Alonso in Queens, as his contract season continues to be underwhelming.

So much so that Jerry finds it harder and harder to justify paying Alonso to be a Met for life.

"If you're watching this team, he does nothing," Jerry said. "You can think about so many at-bats where he comes up with an opportunity to do damage and change a game. He's given you next to nothing this year.

"If I'm the one that's got to write the check off of this year, am I gonna outbid myself for Pete Alonso?"

Joe B didn't fight back on Jerry's doubts, even though he's been a proponent of keeping Alonso a Met for the long term. But it's hard to argue with the disappointment that has been Alonso's contract year.

"I think it's been the worst year he's had as a Met," Joe said. "I think the contract is weighing on his mind."
