Jerry Recco: Will Pete Alonso have similar Scott Boras issue as Jordan Montgomery?
As Pete Alonso draws closer and closer to free agency, Jerry Recco wonders what the Scott Boras impact will be on the Mets slugger's contract discussions, especially after former Yankee Jordan Montgomery said the super-agent Boras "butchered" his free agency this past winter.
"He's been fine by baseball standards for a power hitter, but for Alonso's standards, he's been down for a contract year," Jerry said. "When you think you're one of the top five power hitters in baseball, that's not a great season.
"Alonso goes to Boras, on top of it, doesn't have a great season. I don't know how much leverage he has. It just seems like something is not right with Boras and his clients, at least not last offseason."
Boras clients had a rough offseason, and while Juan Soto will be an obvious exception in the coming winter, Alonso's affiliation with Boras could result in a short-term deal like Montgomery and Blake Snell signed.
"I'm sure Boras can be difficult to deal with, but it works both ways," Chris Lopresti said. "I think Snell had some offers on the table, including one from the Yankees, correct? I don't know if it's 'they're tired of dealing with Boras and owners are colluding to stonewall him and his clients,' or it's just his expectations for massive deals...and there's no cap, we get it, but maybe it's just him overestimating the market this time around."
