Jerry Seinfeld happened to be listening to Chris McMonigle’s show on Tuesday night, so he called in as a surprise, leading to plenty of baseball talk between C-Mac and the famous comedian and Mets superfan.
Naturally, part of the discussion was about Juan Soto, who is set to meet with Mets brass this week in California. Countless Mets fans are craving for Steve Cohen to make a monumental splash and sign Soto to a record deal, but after watching the 2024 Mets make a magical run to the NLCS, Jerry isn’t so sure if Soto is a necessity for him.
“You could make a pretty good argument that this season was the most magical, not counting the two World Series wins,” Seinfeld said. “It was a chemistry, and energy, and an emotional mix of guys who weren’t supposed to be that good. I don’t know what could beat that. Would winning with Juan Soto or Shohei Ohtani be as fun as this? No.”
For Jerry, the cast of characters like Jose Iglesias, Tyrone Taylor, Sean Manaea, and others is what made the season so great, and he isn’t sure if adding a high-priced superstar will create the same fun and magic that was felt in Queens in the summer and fall of 2024.
“As an adult, to be jumping up and down and screaming...there’s no zillion dollar player that is gonna throw their helmet down like Jesse Winker,” Jerry said.
“I don’t know about these giant players.”
