Jerry puzzled by 'weird' jersey retirement speech from Dwight Gooden

Dwight Gooden was honored at Citi Field on Sunday, as his number was retired by the Mets, but there were some boos during his thank you speech when he brought up his success with the Yankees.

Jerry said it came across as odd that the former Mets great then went back to talking about the Yanks, and his desire to return to the Mets not materializing.

“His speech was weird,” Jerry said. “If you see the full thing, it’s weird…the content. Not the way he’s speaking.”

Gooden referenced winning a World Series with the Yankees, and talked multiple times about wanting to return to the Mets but it not working out. Jerry said Gooden would have been better off just sticking to remembering the times that he was in a Mets uniform.

“Three different times, and then bring up the Yankees twice. He almost got booed,” Jerry said. “He’s like ‘Guys, I’m a Met, relax.’ Why do you go there? You got three minutes. You could have just thanked everybody and the fans for ’86. Instead he’s like ‘I wanted to come back. No room. I went here. Wanted to come back. Went to the Yankees. Won a World Series.’

“After he got booed the first time for saying it, he went back to it a second time!”
