It's only been two games, but the Opening Day optimism has already worn off for Mets superfan Joe Benigno.
"I have no confidence that the Mets are gonna do anything this year," Joe said after Friday's narrow loss to the Marlins.
"I know it's only two games in…but what am I supposed to be excited about this team with? The best closer the Mets have ever had, at least for one year, he's out for the year…now [Justin] Verlander. Some kind of injury to his teres muscle? What is a teres? I thought a teres is when you walk out of your apartment and you're on a terrace? God knows how long he's gonna be out for. Are you confident? He's 40 years old."
Verlander was throwing in the outfield before Friday's game, and told reporters he would be pitching through his teres major strain if it were the playoffs, but Joe is frightened by the future Hall of Famer's age, along with the age or durability of several other Mets starters.
"[Max] Scherzer pitched a fine game for the first five innings, and then he lost it in the sixth inning," Joe said. "I'm worried about Scherzer. He broke down at the end of last year and stunk in the biggest games of the year.
"[Jose] Quintana is out, who knows when we'll see him again. [Kodai] Senga, who knows? We've never seen him pitch in the big leagues before."
As for the lineup, Joe doesn't have much confidence their either after the top half of the order.
"The offense has got a lot of holes," Joe said. "We know Pete's gona be great. [Francisco] Lindor, he had a really good year last year, he's a solid player, but he has lapses in big spots. I've got confidence in Alonso and [Jeff] McNeil, I have some confidence in Lindor, I have confidence in [Brandon] Nimmo and [Starling] Marte…but outside of that, who do you have confidence in?"
