Joe Benigno calls out Pete Alonso for viral comments, not hustling out of box
Jerry Recco and Joe Benigno opened Tuesday's show by talking Mets, specifically Pete Alonso, who made waves before Monday's series opener by pointing to his home run pace and All-Star selection when asked about his underwhelming contract season.
Joe took exception to that response from Alonso.
"Is he kidding?" Joe said. "He hasn't had a good year…Pete, who are you kidding?
"He's telling you he's having a good year. That's the problem, he's not."
Jerry, as he said Monday, believes in the end, Alonso will appear to have had a good year judging by the back-of-the-baseball-card stat line, but those who have watched every day will have a much different opinion, unless something changes dramatically over the next seven weeks.
"It's also the eye test," Jerry said. "At the end of the season, Alonso is gonna finish with 35 home runs and close to 100 RBI. On paper, it looks fine…to sit there and think that is goig to get you a gigantic raise as you're getting older, you're kidding yourself."
Alonso's comments weren't the only issue Joe had on Tuesday morning, as he was chapped about the Mets slugger being thrown out at second base trying to stretch a double after a pop fly found no-man's land in shallow right field.
"If he's running hard completely out of the box, he would have walked to second base," Joe said. "I mean, come on."
