Joe & Evan react to thrilling Mets clincher: 'This is one of the great wins ever'
The Mets are going to the playoffs, coming back in thrilling fashion to beat the Braves 8-7 in Atlanta to punch their ticket to October.
It was an instant classic, arguably the game of the year in all of baseball, and it helped New York exorcise their Atlanta demons and finish an improbable season that now includes a postseason berth.
The Evan and Tiki crew were live on the air as the final out was recorded, shortly after Francisco Lindor's game-winning home run in the top of the ninth, and it was pure elation from Evan, who rode an emotional roller coaster for three hours.
"I want to apologize. Let me apologize to the New York Mets," Evan said. "You guys were once gutless cowards. You are no longer. What a freaking win. Holy crap what a win!
"I could shove my scorebook because who gives a rat's ass about game two?? It doesn't even matter!"
Tommy Lugauer was much more composed throughout the game, as he held his belief that the Mets were going to get it done. So, he wasn't surprised when New York pulled it out.
"I've been telling you all year long, this team was different," Loogy said. "All the negativity and the toxicity, the no fun police, they were waiting in the wings saying the Mets would get swept in this doubleheader...as long as I'm at this freaking radio station, the negativity and the nonsense that has been spewed for decades is over!"
The final out was perfect timing, as Joe Benigno jumped on for his weekly Jets spot moments after the Mets win went final, and he was all in on his Mets, who he says will be "dangerous" in October.
"This has been one of the most fun Met years ever," Joe said. "What they have accomplished after the 0-5 start and being 11 games under .500...for this team to basically have the best record in baseball since May 30 is just incredible.
"This is one of the great wins ever. To me, the greatest Met game of all time is still remains game six against Houston when we won the pennant in '86, the 16 inning game. That was as pressure packed a game as you could ever have...this game is right up there. There's no doubt about it."
Evan was in full agreement, and says Monday's win is the best regular season victory in franchise history.
"I don't think there is a regular season game in Mets history that comes close," Evan said.
