Joe Benigno offers formal apology to David Stearns: 'Gotta give him credit'
Joe Benigno said Thursday that he was pleasantly surprised by the Mets success in 2024, and after another win, he is ready to say that he might have been wrong in his belief that New York will still come up just short of the playoffs.
In fact, he felt Friday morning was the right time to issue a formal apology to David Stearns.
"I was down on David Stearns. I didn't want him. Small market guy," Joe said. "David, I gotta give you an apology. The moves that you have made - just think of the guy Stearns has brought in, and how good they've been.
We mentioned Tyrone Taylor. We mentioned Harrison Bader. How about Luis Torrens? How good has he been? I know Luis Severino has had a couple bad starts the last couple times out, but overall, he's been good.
"How about Sean Manaea? All of a sudden, Sean Manaea looks like Randy Johnson out there…Iglesias, how about him? How good is he? OMG!"
Stearns' additions have been key contributors for the Mets this season, and even after falling as low as 11 games under .500, New York has righted the ship and continued to post one of the best records in baseball since June, which Joe says deserves a round of applause for new president of baseball operations who helped construct the roster, and hire a Manager of the Year candidate in Carlos Mendoza.
"It's crazy," Joe said. "You gotta give him credit."
