Joe Benigno joined Evan and Tiki on Wednesday to react to the Jets hiring Aaron Glenn as their new head coach, but he also sounded off on the continued standoff between the Mets and Pete Alonso, and directed his blame towards Steve Cohen.
“The boy genius, Stearns...doesn’t want him back,” Joe said. “The guy that I blame is the owner.
“I thought Steve Cohen had a feel for the fanbase. Now it’s ‘We’re gonna get Vlad Guerrero.’ You know what? Screw Vlad Guerrero. I want my guy.”
Cohen has already shown plenty of willingness to spend, paying nearly $800 million to bring Juan Soto to Queens and change the landscape of the sport in New York. But Joe wants to see the richest owner in the sport take care of his own, even if the market for Alonso is seemingly non-existent.
“I’m tired of it. From Tom Seaver to Darryl Strawberry to Ray Knight to Kevin Mitchell to David Murphy to David Cone to Zack Wheeler,” Joe said. “Now, Steve Cohen is doing the same thing. I am beyond livid.
“I blame Cohen. To me, it’s on the owner. Cohen is supposed to have a feel for the fanbase. He walks around with the Mets cap on and the whole nine hours. It’s on you, Stevie, to bring this guy back where he belongs.”
