Joe Benigno couldn't watch the Mets' biggest win of the season live due to issues with his cable, and while he was thrilled to learn that Francisco Alvarez and Mark Canha led the team to a dramatic fourth straight victory, he still isn't hopping on the bandwagon.
"I'm not saying 'Here they are, they're making the big run now,'" Joe said. "They win 10 in a row, I'll start to think that…I don't think they're making the playoffs, I don't think the pitching is good enough…I'm not gonna sit here as a Mets fan and be delusional that this team is making the playoffs."
With that in mind, Joe doesn't want to see the Mets deal away prospects to try and salvage the 2023 season, especially for Shohei Ohtani, who would command a boatload in return, should the scuffling and banged-up Angels decide to trade him.
"If I'm the Mets, no trades for Ohtani," Joe said. "I fully expect Uncle Steve to go after Ohtani in the offseason and throw that money at him. That's when you go get him. You don't start giving up the young players you have here to get Ohtani, because you're not going anywhere. They're not winning this year. It's not about this year anymore…this team is not a championship team."
If the Mets were to turn their current winning streak into a prolonged turnaround that would win Joe over, Pete Alonso would have to be involved. Unfortunately, Joe sees a player who hasn't been the same since he was hit on the wrist in Atlanta.
"Pete Alonso has not been the same guy since Charlie Morton hit him on purpose - which he did - in Atlanta a couple weeks ago," Joe said. He has not been the same guy since then, and I can only hope he snaps out of it. Maybe the Home Run Derby gets him going."
