The Mets offense has looked better over the last two games, with Francisco Lindor and Starling Marte hitting their first home runs of the year on Friday after Pete Alonso blasted two on Wednesday.
Still, Joe Benigno doesn't have much confidence in the lineup after their top bats.
"I still think they're a couple bats short," Joe said. "It's nice to see Alonso hitting home runs, Lindor, Marte, those are guys you need hitting balls out of the ballpark. I've got confidence in [Brandon] Nimmo…I got confidence in [Jeff] McNeil even though he's had a slow start.
"After that?"
Joe's solution? It's simple: play the kids.
"How long do we have to wait for the Mets to bring Brett Baty up?" Joe said. "When he's healthy, you gotta bring him up and put him at third base.
"I wouldn't mind seeing some other young guys. [Ronny] Mauricio, why isn't he up at DH? The Mets are a couple bats short."
Baty is day-to-day with a thumb injury after enjoying a torrid start at Triple-A, including a 5-for-5 day with two home runs in Syracuse's season opener. Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Mauricio is on a heater of his own, boasting a 1.253 OPS with three home runs in Triple-A to begin the season. with Eduardo Escobar currently occupying third base and Daniel Vogelbach handling the bulk of DH duties, Joe wants to see two of the Mets' top prospects take over to inject more life into the lineup, though that seems unlikely since top prospect Francisco Alvarez is being treated as a backup after being called up to replace injured catcher Omar Narvaez.
