Joe Maddon wants to interview for Mets manager: Report

Joe Maddon reportedly wants to manage in the majors again, and the former Angels skipper has his eyes set on the Mets.

According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, Maddon is telling those close to him that he wants a shot at the Mets job, and is "hoping to at least interview for the opening."

The 69-year-old Maddon was let go early in the 2022 season, when the Angels were out to a 27-29 record and on their way to a third losing season in as many tries under Maddon. Before his most recent managerial stint, Maddon spent five seasons with the Cubs, most notably ending an infamous 108-year title drought in 2016, though Chicago's core was expected to win multiple titles, and never made it back.

Maddon also managed the Rays to a World Series appearance in 2008.

Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns will be making the hire after deciding to move on from Buck Showalter. Craig Counsell, manager of the Brewers, is expected to be a candidate considering Stearns came to New York from Milwaukee.
