Jonathan Villar hopes to return to Mets right after IL stint

Another Mets contributor has landed on the IL, with Jonathan Villar being the latest entry due to a sore right calf.

New York should be able to weather Villar’s absence now that Jeff McNeil is back, but Villar had been a valuable spark for the Mets with the absence of McNeil and J.D. Davis, the latter who is still on the IL. Villar has slashed .246/.333/.410 this season, and has come up in big moments many times while playing a more regular role than expected, and hopes to be back right after his 10-day stint on the IL is up.

“We’ll see how he progresses,” manager Luis Rojas said about Villar’s return. “He thinks so. We’ve had several conversations…he wanted this too, just to take his time and makes sure he gets this out of the way. He has improved, but when he gets out there he’s not gonna hold back…you’ve seen how he plays. He’s going fast all the time.”

Villar injured his calf back on Monday, but was just put on the IL on Friday, so his 10-day stint is retroactive to June 22. The injury is on the same leg as his hamstring injury that caused him to leave a game earlier this month, but he still hopes to be back right when he is eligible, even as New York remains cautious.

“His plan is to be back at the end of this, but let’s see how things progress day to day with the treatment and the different things that they’re gonna be doing,” Rojas said.
