Jose Iglesias joined Boomer and Gio on Tuesday morning to talk about his upcoming performance at the next Boomer and Gio Live, but first, he looked back on the magical Mets season of 2024, in which he was front and center of the improbable run.
“It was a privilege…we had great character and leaders in that clubhouse,” Iglesias said. “Great human beings overall.
“Things started clicking and we started playing better. We became a big family. It was a very special year for me and the organization. As a culture, we set the bar high…we fell in love with the process, and the results literally speak for themselves.”
Iglesias came to New York as a below-average hitter for his 11-year career up to that point, having played for six big-league teams since 2011. But he hit .337 in 2024, became one of the many Mets to surprise and help the team to the NLCS, and his hit song ‘OMG’ became the anthem of the team’s turnaround, to the point where he played it live in front of the Citi Field crowd after a regular season game. Now, he’ll play it at The Paramount on Friday night.
“You never know. Thanks to the fans and the people that connect to the energy behind the song and the lyrics,” Iglesias said. “It’s a song that came out of my own experience and a lot of immigrants crossing the border and coming to this great country for a dream. I’m one of them, and very pleased about what I’ve done…it’s a dream come true to be able to connect with millions of people, and especially get us going together as a team.”
Iglesias was one of the faces of one of the more unforgettable Mets seasons ever, but now, he is a free agent, though he hopes to be back in Queens in 2025.
“I hope so. I know they’re a team that wants to win, and I can help them,” Iglesias said. “I can help on and off the field…let’s see how that plays out in free agency.”
