Juan Soto made sure to hook Brett Baty up for giving the Mets’ new superstar his No. 22.
The Mets released a video on their Instagram page of Baty walking out of the team’s spring training facility to the sight of Soto, in full uniform with his No. 22 (it was Photo Day for the Mets) holding a set of keys with a shiny black SUV waiting for him. A crowd was waiting around the corner to surprise Baty as he took a lap around his new ride, taking in all the bells and whistles that came with giving up his number to his new teammate.
“No you didn’t!” Baty said as Soto handed him the keys.
The surprise even game with a gigantic bow on the hood of the vehicle, a touch Baty was appreciative of. He got in the driver’s seat, started the engine, and thanked Soto again for the gift, as Soto thanked Baty for relinquishing the No. 22, the only number he has worn as a big leaguer since making his debut in 2018.
The gift was an expense Soto can afford after signing a record-breaking contract with the Mets that can pay him in the neighborhood of $800 million when it’s all said and done.
