Keith criticizes Steve Cohen, Mets for nickel and diming Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso and the Mets still have nothing close in terms of an agreement to keep the homegrown slugger in Queens, and Keith McPherson says Alonso can’t be happy about how his free agency has gone so far.

Nor should be he happy as he remains unsigned after seeing the Mets spend big money on other stars since Steve Cohen took over, including this winter when he made a record-breaking signing to acquire Juan Soto.

“This guy is made out of money. We already saw him trade away contracts,” Keith said of Cohen. “Now, all of a sniudden, you can’t do right by Pete Alonso? Because you have young talent coming up? Because David Stearns is telling you to evaluate the young guys?

“Man, give Pete Alonso the money he’s earned after all these years, and worry about the future in the future. It’s not gonna hurt your pockets at all.”

The Mets have reportedly preferred to sign Alonso to a short-term deal with opt outs after a down year in 2024, but the first baseman has been one of the top home run hitters in the sport since making his debut in 2019, and would be on track to break every Mets position player record should he remain with the team for life. Keith says he should be rewarded, especially after hitting one of the biggest home runs in franchise history in the Wild Card Series.

“Mets fans, take a walk telling Pete that he should settle,” Keith said. “He had to watch everyone else hit the Mega Millions in a Mets uniform? ‘I gotta watch Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander make more than a year than I make? I gotta watch Juan Soto, who hasn’t stepped a foot in here, get a contract that can earn over $800 million?’”
