Keith doesn't see Yankees making Pete Alonso splash: 'Lot of Mets in his blood'
Pete Alonso is still out there for the taking as a free agent, and the Yankees are in need of a first baseman.
Could the righty slugger be a continued consolation prize for losing out on Juan Soto? Keith McPherson doesn't buy it, as he believes the homegrown Met wants to stay in Queens, and doesn't believe Alonso would be a fit for what the Yanks are looking for.
"I don't think they're gonna pay Pete what he wants, and I don't think he wants to put on the pinstripes," Keith said. "There's a lot of Mets in his blood.
"I think they get younger and more athletic at the position. I think Pete signs with the Mets."
Alonso had a down year in his contract season, although he broke out and hit some massive playoff home runs for the Mets, including the game-winning home run in the deciding game of the Wild Card Series. But his season overall has almost certainly brought down his market compared to what Alonso hoped to get before the year, though Keith still doesn't see the Yanks going after him.
"I think Pete is gonna have to come down a little bit," Keith said. "It's not gonna be a seven-year deal.
"Once he signs and he's taken care of...I think he'll be a better player. I think he'll go back to the player he was a couple years ago."
