Keith: Mets can't compare themselves to Yankees, must 'rebrand'

The Mets responded to their spirited win in the London Series by flopping against the putrid Marlins on Tuesday night, and Keith says it is another reminder that this team simply doesn't have it, and needs to tear it down and start over under David Stearns.

"Are we gonna call a spade a spade and realize that this team is not consistently good enough, similar to last year, and it would do you much better to sell off…in a way that only Steve Cohen can?" Keith said. "You look at the top of that order, and it's tough man. You can't have Francisco Lindor going 0-for-4, Pete Alonso going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, and Brandon Nimmo going 0-for-4.

"Who are we fooling here? It's a foregone conclusion…going through the motions until they start to sell off."

Cohen has voiced his expectation of the Mets being a playoff team, but the Mets are still facing an uphill battle for the final Wild Card spot, and Keith says it would benefit the team to realize that they're not the Yankees, they're not expected to contend every year, and the best path forward is to start anew and try to build that type of brand and image from scratch.

"You gotta stop comparing yourselves to the Yankees. Stop doing that," Keith said. "I don't think the Angels compare themselves to the Dodgers. I don't think the White Sox compare themselves to the Cubs…you have to rebrand. This is a rebrand that the Mets are going through. You have to rewrite your history."
