A caller raised his concerns to Keith about the Mets saying goodbye to Pete Alonso, but Keith made the case why a blockbuster deal to trade away their homegrown star could be worth the gamble.

“They never traded [Jacob] deGrom, and what happened with deGrom?” Keith said, noting deGrom leaving in free agency before blowing out his arm with Texas. “I think the Mets fans and the Mets owner made the right decision with deGrom. Imagine they paid hime what he wanted? Then they had that miserable season…and deGrom throws his arm out?”

So, while trading Alonso seems risky, it is also a risk to let him sign elsewhere and free agency and lose him for next to nothing, when a trade could further bolster the prospect pool and set the Mets up for sustained success in the future.

“What if you trade him at the deadline and you get some top prospects, similar to what you were able to do with Billy Eppler?” Keith said. “What is David Stearns is better than Billy Eppler was, and you’re able to trade Pete Alonso to the Cubs for two or three of their top prospects?”
