Kodai Senga 'appreciates' Mets shuffling rotation to get him extra rest: 'It helps'

Just hours before first pitch against the Cubs on Tuesday night, the Mets announced that Tylor Megill, not Kodai Senga, would take the ball and get the start in the series opener in Chicago.

Megill and Senga swapped scheduled days, as the Mets continue to be cautious with their new righty, who is used to extra rest in between starts from his years pitching in Japan.

The switch was made to allow Senga to continue to pitch on extra rest after Wednesday's start, as he now will pitch next Tuesday instead of Sunday.

Senga told reporters before Tuesday's loss that the extra rest helps his routine to stay healthy and remain in a familiar pitching pattern.

"Obviously, it's a new environment, new ball and everything is new, so having those extra days helps," Senga said, via his interpreter. "It helps. I appreciate knowing they think about me and giving me those extra days. Because I'm getting those days, I just need to prepare as much as I can to make sure I don't go down with an injury, and just making sure I do my job."

Pitching in Senga's place, Megill was knocked around for six runs on six hits in just 3.2 innings of work.
