Luis Guillorme on costly fielding gaffe in Tuesday's loss: 'Didn't see it whatsoever'

The Mets, while struggling at the plate, still were within striking distance trailing 2-0 in the sixth inning on Tuesday night, until a critical gaffe by Luis Guillorme helped break the game open.

With a runner on first, Alex Call bounced a grounder up the middle that Guillorme clearly didn’t read well off the bat, as the Mets infielder broke to his right as the ball rolled past him on his left, as Guillorme had moved in the opposite direction of where the ball actually traveled.

The grounder could have resulted in an inning-ending double play. Instead, it extended the frame, and Washington pounced with three more runs in an eventual 5-0 loss for New York.

“Didn’t see the ball off the bat whatsoever,” Guillorme said. “I had no idea where it was. All I could do was read the swing. It looked like a pull swing, and the ball went the other way. Didn’t see it whatsoever, until it got through me.”

Guillorme wasn’t making any excuses for himself, and was clearly still beating himself up for the botched play, though the Mets very well may have still lost the game considering the feeble bats that couldn’t push across a run.

“I hate plays like that,” Guillorme said. “I hate not picking up my pitchers. It cost him a couple extra pitches, and a couple runs. I cost the team there. For me, that’s what I take pride in, my defense. So when something like that happens, I’m not happy about it.”
