Luis Severino’s bounceback season in Queens has reportedly earned him a multi-year deal.
According to multiple reports, the righty has agreed to a three-year, $67 million deal with the A’s, a significant payday for a pitcher who signed a one-year flier with the Mets a season ago.
The contract has an opt-out after year two. The Mets will get a draft pick as a result of Severino signing elsewhere after rejecting the qualifying offer.
The oft-injured starter was durable and productive for New York in 2024, tossing 182 innings and posting a 3.91 ERA in 31 starts. The workload was Severino’s largest since he was an All-Star and Cy Young candidate back in 2018.
The Mets took a chance on Severino after the worst year of his career, when he pitched to a dreadful 6.65 ERA in 89.1 innings with the Yankees in 2023. But he, along with Sean Manaea, enjoyed a renaissance in Queens with pitching coach Jeremy Hefner and company, and for Severino, it resulted in agreeing to the most guaranteed money the A’s have ever signed a player to in their history.
Severino will now be a part of an A’s franchise that plans on playing in Sacramento next season as the team prepares to move to Las Vegas after leaving Oakland following the 2024 season.
The Mets seemingly moved on from Severino after signing Frankie Montas to a multi-year deal earlier this week, and they have other rotation holes to fill as well, as Manaea is also a free agent.
