Max Scherzer starting for Mets Sunday is on the table

Now that Max Scherzer came out of his rehab start with no issues, a Sunday start against the Marlins is in the cards, manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday.

“That’s one of the scenarios,” Showalter said. “One of many.”

Scherzer threw 65 pitches in his rehab start on Tuesday night, his first game action since suffering a strained oblique in a May 18 start. With Tylor Megill shut down a month, Jacob deGrom not yet on a rehab assignment and Carlos Carrasco leaving Wednesday’s start with an injury, New York could certainly use the rotation help.

Of course, the team’s depth issues in the rotation won’t impact the caution they take with Scherzer, who signed a record deal this offseason and has posted a 2.54 ERA in 49.2 innings of work this season.
