Max Scherzer struggles again for Mets: 'Put the camera right on me. I've gotta be better'

Max Scherzer once again didn't have his best stuff on Tuesday night, coughing up a 5-1 lead before leaving with the Mets trailing 6-5 in the fourth inning.

After the game, Scherzer pointed to his slider as the culprit behind his struggles.

"This is simple. I struggled with my slider," Scherzer said. "Every time I threw my slider, it was hanging. I wasn't executing it the way I needed to, especially with two strikes."

Scherzer served up a slider right over the middle of the plate to Giancarlo Stanton in the top of the first, and the Yankee slugger clubbed a 408-foot home run to left field, his 38th long ball in his career against the Mets. He also served up a fat slider to the slumping DJ LeMahieu, who made Scherzer pay with a two-run home run.

"I don't think it's necessarily back to the drawing board. I gotta make a little fix on it," Scherzer said. "When you go out there and pitch, you know when you rip a slider and rip it in the right locations. I had the feeling I was coming through the baseball…and it just wasn't there. usually that's just a little fix to get everything on time, and then you get it back."

Regardless of what fixes are needed, Scherzer says he simply has to be better than he has been this season, and especially on Tuesday night.

"I gotta be better tonight," Scherzer said. "You can put the camera right on me. I've gotta be better."
