Max Scherzer is the talk of the town in Mets Land, after the three-time Cy Young Award winner signed a record-breaking deal to come to New York, but he acknowledges that there is another superstar in the rotation, and he will still be the ace in Queens.
That star is Jacob deGrom, who was putting together one of the best seasons in baseball history last year before injuries got in the way. If healthy, deGrom would almost certainly be the team's Opening Day starter, and even though that was a title held by Scherzer for the past four years, he is more than willing to take a step back for his new teammate.
"I'm here to help Jake," Scherzer told Bob Klapisch of the Star Ledger. "He should get the ball whenever he wants. He comes before me."
DeGrom has started the last three Opening Days for the Mets, and likely will a fourth against the Nationals in April. Scherzer has spent the bulk of his 14-year career as an ace, and rightfully so given his eight straight All-Star selections since 2013 (there was no All-Star Game in 2020). But this year will be a different look given the presence of deGrom, but Scherzer sounds more than willing to occupy the second spot.
