McMonigle: Would be 'stupid' if Mets have completely shut the door on Pete Alonso

Pete Alonso is still out there for the taking, and after the Blue Jays signed switch-hitting slugger Anthony Santander to a team-friendly deal, Chris McMonigle wonders if the door is open for the Mets to come back to the negotiating table with their homegrown All-Star.

"I'd be surprised if the Mets just walked away," C-Mac said. "I refuse to believe the Mets have just walked away from it, and I still believe that Pete Alonso would like to be a New York Met.

"Pete just took another hit. Santander hit 44 home runs, switch hitter...he does strike out and hits for low average, a lot of the same of what Pete's dealing with. And this was supposed to be a guy who git paid on some level. Five years for $95 million seems like a bargain."

The Mets have reportedly pivoted to their backup plan by bringing back Jesse Winker and signing A.J. Minter, but C-Mac says it would be foolish if David Stearns and company didn't remain open to the idea of bringing back Alonso, especially as his market seems to continue to fall.

"I find it hard to believe that they've completely shut the door," C-Mac said. "Why? Because it's stupid, in my opinion.

"You're the richest owner in baseball. I'm not saying pay him crazy money...but if Pete wants $30 million per, would you give him $30 million for one year? Don't you think the Mets would be foolish not to do that? They still need pop in this lineup."
