The Mets are reportedly acquiring Giants veteran Darin Ruf in exchange for J.D. Davis and prospects, according to Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Ruf, who just turned 36 last week, is in his eight big-league season, putting up a .701 OPS with a .216 batting average and 11 home runs in 314 plate appearances. Last season, in 117 games, he put up an impressive .904 OPS with 16 home runs.
Ruf has played first base, left field, and right field this season, but his defensive numbers at each position are below league average. He is signed through 2023 with a team option for 2024.
The Mets will part with A-level pitchers Nick Zwack and Carson Seymour, along with Thomas Szapucki, a Toms River native who has pitched five innings for the Mets over the last two seasons, per Sherman,
Davis has long been considered a trade candidate for New York, as the 29-year-old is managing just a .683 OPS on the season. Meanwhile, the addition of Ruf will give the Mets a platoon with Daniel Vogelbach, also acquired via trade. Vogelbach has better numbers against righties, while Ruf holds an OPS of .886 against lefties this season.
