The Mets have reportedly acquired a top bullpen arm, but it came at a cost.
According to multiple reports, New York has traded for Giants submariner Tyler Rogers, the 34-year-old righty who has pitched to a stellar 1.80 ERA in 53 appearances this season. According to MLB insider Jon Heyman, the Mets have parted with prospects Blake Tidwell, Drew Gilbert, and Jose Butto.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported the inclusion of Butto.
“They gave up a lot,” Evan Roberts said when reacting live on air to the reported deal, though he added that David Stearns brought in “One of the most reliable relievers in baseball” in return.
Rogers is a free agent at the end of the season.
One of the most durable arms in the game, Rogers has led the league in appearances each of the past two years, and four times in the past six. He has a 2.79 ERA in seven big-league seasons, all with the Giants.
The first-place Mets were in desperate need of bullpen help, and they have checked that box with 24 hours to go until the trade deadline. But they unquestionably parted with a big haul to get the deal done.
