The MLB Trade Deadline isn’t until Friday at 4 p.m., but already, a flurry of big moves have been made, including the Yankees’ acquisition of Joey Gallo.
Perhaps somewhat atypical, Mets acting GM Zack Scott told Carton & Roberts on Wednesday, as he noted the experience he has had in general so far.
“It goes in waves, so you’ll have kind of a flurry of calls and texts, then some downtime,” Scott said. “It’s been overall fairly slow, but it tends to pick up as each day passes, and we’re hoping to continue to get more action going. We’re in a war room, so we have a lot of different conversations going on within our group about pros and cons of any deal, but there’s an unpredictable nature to it. Sometimes you end up just staring at each other waiting for calls.”
The Mets have already acquired Rich Hill, but as of Wednesday when he joined WFAN, Scott said that “there are some other things we got fairly close on,” but nothing else so far for the Mets. The GM noted that pitching was likely the priority early in the interview, and he would be “surprised” if Hill is the only acquisition before Friday afternoon.
“In general, yes, because with this market so far, things will start moving. But we can only control so much, and the people who have the players you want to acquire have more control,” Scott said. “They may not like our prospects as much as others, but we’re the New York Mets, and we should be in on anyone that can make an impact for our club. I think it’s important to try to put our best foot forward and try to win the division and make a deep run in the postseason.”
Scott also said he doesn’t feel any pressure to make a deal just because, but instead feels the pressure he puts on himself to try to put the Mets in the best position to end the year as champions.
“I don’t feel it from the outside, I put it on myself because we’re in this to try to win a title, and there are only so many chances you have to improve your club,” he said. “That’s where the pressure comes from: we want to win, and this is the time to do something, so let’s put our best foot forward.”
And if and when he does, he has the full blessing of Steve Cohen.
“Anything we’re going to do, and this is true anywhere I think – before you do something, you let your owner know,” Scott said. “You’re making recommendations, and typically the owner is supportive as you make your case. Even small things I give a heads up on, but he’s very supportive, so the conversations are always good.”
