The Mets made a slew of roster moves ahead of Monday’s series opener in Arizona, including one switch that swapped out one former Yankees for another.
The team announced Monday that as of Sunday, they had optioned catcher Patrick Mazeika, outfielder Khalil Lee, and RHP Sean Reid-Foley to Triple-A Syracuse. And, on Monday, the team designated outfielder Cameron Maybin and RHP Sam McWilliams for assignment.
All that opened four 25-man roster spots and two 40-man roster spots, which the team filled by activating outfielder Kevin Pillar and first baseman Pete Alonso from the 10-day injured list, reinstating RHP Seth Lugo from the 60-day IL, and purchasing the contract of outfielder Mason Williams from Triple-A.
Mazeika (3-for-14, 1 HR, 4 RBI), Lee (1-for-18, 1 RBI), and Maybin (1-for-28) were part of the wave of reinforcements brought up in the wake of a rash of Mets injuries that, at one point, had 17 players on the IL.
Reid-Foley, acquired in the Steven Matz deal, was 1-0 with a 1.98 ERA in 13 2/3 innings over six appearances. McWilliams, 25, signed a minor-league deal with the Mets last November, and was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in 8 1/3 innings at Triple-A.
Alonso (.236-6-19) was on the IL for the minimum 10 days due to a sprained right hand, while Pillar (.250-2-8) went on the IL on March 18 after being hit in the face with a pitch the night before. He has been testing a mask to wear defensively while he continues to heal, and could be back in the starting lineup at some point this week.
Lugo has missed the entire season so far after offseason surgery on his right elbow, and pitched 4 1/3 innings over four rehab outings.
Williams, who was once a fourth-round pick of the Yankees in 2010, played 10 games with the Orioles last season and was hitting .373 in 19 games at Syracuse this year.
