Mets add two, lose two in minor-league Rule 5 Draft

The Mets made two selections in Wednesday's minor-league Rule 5 Draft, but also lost two players as well.

The additions were RHP Alex Valverde, who was selected from the Rays in Round 1, and RHP Carlos Ocampo, who was selected from the Cubs in Round 2. Both losses came in Round 3, as the Mets saw RHPs Allan Winans and Tommy Wilson in back-to-back picks in Round 3 by Atlanta and Seattle, respectively.


Valverde, 25, was the Rays' 22nd-round pick in 2017, and he was 2-5 with a 4.88 ERA and three saves in 30 games (10 starts) with Double-A Montgomery in 2021, with 92 strikeouts in 72 innings. Over his four years in the minors, Valverde has a 4.38 ERA in 271 innings.

Ocampo, 23, was originally an international free agent signing of the Cubs in 2015. He was 4-0 with a 5.85 ERA and three saves in 29 relief appearances at Low-A Myrtle Beach in 2021, with 67 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings, and over parts of four seasons in the minors he has a 4.43 ERA in 152 1/3 innings.

Winans, 26, was the Mets' 26th-round pick in 2018. He split 2021 between High-A Brooklyn and Double-A Binghamton, going 2-3 with a 1.72 ERA and three saves in 47 innings over 26 relief appearances, and for his career, Winans has a 2.64 ERA and 14 saves in 109 innings over 67 appearances.

Wilson, 25, was the Mets' 19th-round pick in 2018, and he had a 2.35 ERA and one save in 10 relief appearances at Binghamton. For his career, he has a 3.28 ERA in 151 innings over 42 games (21 starts).
