Bartolo Colon wants a chance to help the Mets’ suddenly razor-thin pitching depth after Max Scherzer and Tylor Megill joined Jacob deGrom on the IL, and Colon’s former manager says he would be up to the task.
Speaking on SNY, Terry Collins told the panel that if New York took a flyer on Colon, who turns 49 next week, he would be able to immediately eat up some innings.

“I bet he can give you five innings today,” Collins said.
Of course, Colon hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2018, when he posted a 5.78 ERA in 146 innings with the Rangers, and has since been playing in the Mexican Leagues, refusing to stop playing the game he loves. It’s that devotion that made him a cult hero in the majors, but it’s tough to imagine that he would be able to offer the Mets much at this point. But Collins was his manager when he was an All-Star with New York in 2016, and doesn’t think Colon should be counted out.
