The Mets sit 7.5 games back of a playoff spot after Wednesday's loss to the Yankees, fueling more speculation as to whether the team with the highest payroll in baseball history will be trade deadline sellers.
C-Mac says the best course of action is to simply sit tight, and hope the current roster can go on a run over the next two months.
"The best thing the Mets could do is stand pat," C-Mac said. "The more I think about it, the more I say that's what I would do. I would not go out there and trade David Robertson or Tommy Pham. I wouldn't trade middling players who are having good years to get back what I don't deem to be useful.
"If David Robertson really brings back a big-time prospect…and something you can't say no to, obviously I'd open the phone lines and talk to anybody. But unless I really get something I love, I'd rather just stand pat and see if the team that played in the first game of this series can show up for most of the rest of the way, and see if they can chase down those teams."
Robertson would likely be a coveted bullpen arm with playoff experience, but rental relievers don't net the return they once did, and C-Mac doesn't think the return for any tradeable pieces outweighs the potential reward of seeing if the team, as currently constructed, can finally wake up.
"I don't think you're trading Verlander or Scherzer," C-Mac said. "Maybe these guys become who they've been their entire careers…maybe Alonso gets hot and things go well…that's the best hope for the Mets, because of where they are."
