The Mets are lapping the rest of the NL East with a cozy 10.5 game lead atop the division, and that's with their two best pitchers, and arguably the best 1-2 punch in baseball, on the shelf.
With that said, Tiki Barber had a bold declaration during Wednesday's show: this Mets team could be the best in franchise history.
"The new York Mets have a shot, especially if Jacob deGrom comes back and is Jacob deGrom, and Max Scherzer comes back and is Max Scherzer…this team is crafting themselves to be one of, if not the best team in Mets history," Tiki said.
"That [1986] team was super talented. They won 108 games, they were amazing. From Gary Carter to Darryl Strawberry…you can name them all. They were amazing. But it was a different type of construction. It was a team that relied on all those stars to be stars. And by the way, they were…but this Mets team, it's different."
The '86 team was indeed loaded with star talent, certainly more than what this Mets team currently sports, but Tiki said that is part of what could make the 2022 Mets better than the franchise's last World Series champion.
"This team, not the individuals, not the guys that are gonna be Hall of Famers…this team has the inklings of one of the great teams in Mets history, because they're a team," Tiki said. "Some things that aren't stat based…these guys win, and they keep doing it."
Brandon Tierney couldn't believe his ears.
"The '86 Mets would destroy this team," BT said.
"Can you start playing some good teams? The Mets have played the Phillies 14 times, they stink, and today will be the 10th time they play the Nats."
