Bobby Valentine showed up to Mets Old Timers’ Day in style.
As all of the fan favorites were introduced and later lined up along the baselines, the former Mets manager received a nice ovation when he emerged from the third base dugout, and delighted many when he was seen sporting a fake mustache, a callback to his unforgettable move of reappearing in the Mets dugout with the haphazard disguise during a game in 1999.
Valentine was ejected from the June game against the Blue Jays when a catcher’s balk was called on Mike Piazza for coming too far out of the catcher’s box to throw out a baserunner on a pitchout, but was seen not long after wearing sunglasses and two strips of eye black above his upper lip to serve as as the stache.
Valentine was suspended and fined for the move, but now it lives on as a famous moment that gave a nice callback to on Saturday.
