The Mets failed to gain another game of cushion between themselves and the Braves in the NL East after Wednesday’s loss, meaning the lead still stands at just one game.
But Gio still isn’t sweating the defending champs, even as they continue on a torrid stretch (Thursday’s loss to the Nationals notwithstanding).
Gio is still waiting for the teams to square off later this month in a series that many believe will determine the division, and Gio is confident it will cement New York as the top team.
“That’s when I feel the most comfortable about the Mets beating the Braves in the NL East,” Gio said. “I just feel like they’re a better team overall.
“For the most part, they have won more games against the Braves this year. I just feel like they’re the overall better team, even though the Braves have been on this unbelievable run for months.”
The Mets are currently 9-7 against Atlanta this year, though they carry a -9 run differential over those 16 games. But the upcoming three games in Atlanta next weekend will be when it really counts.
