Brett Baty is just one game into his big-league career, but Brandon Tierney saw enough in his Mets debut to believe that the hype around the touted prospect is real.
Of course, hitting a home run in your first big-league at-bat helps crank up the optimism, but BT was particularly impressed with Baty ripping a 113 mph fielder's choice to shortstop, the top exit velocity of the game.
"How many players this year have hit the ball the opposite way and have an exit velocity of at least 110 mph?" BT said. "I'm not saying it never happens…but how many players this year go oppo in the infield and it's 113 mph? How many guys do that, and it's a lefty hitter off a lefty hitter? I think he might be one of one, if I had to guess.
"Until you see them dig into a batter's box in a major league stadium, see major league stuff, and get a sense of how slow or quick their heartbeat is, and then the mechanics of their swing, the Mets just found their next third baseman for the next 12 or 13 years."
Of course, plenty can happen after just one game, as many hyped prospects faded out after promising beginnings, but with Baty's smooth lefty stroke, BT is convinced the Mets have found something special.
"Baty is going to be a star with that swing," BT said. "That swing was glorious."
