Steve Somers loves what he sees from Mets thanks to Buck Showalter: 'They have an adult in the room'

Steve Somers has a lot to be happy about nowadays.

The WFAN legend is enjoying retirement thanks to his Rangers and Mets, the former being two wins away from their first Stanley Cup final appearance since 2014, and the latter boasting the best record in the National League in year two under promising new ownership.

When it comes to those Mets, Steve is giddy about having a difference-making manager in Buck Showalter, who has proven to be arguably the most important offseason acquisition for New York, even in a winter where it added a stud in Max Scherzer.

"They have an adult in the room," Steve said during the latest guest Schmooze with Keith McPherson. "He's been there, he's done that…he lets them play, lets them do their thing, doesn't set down a lot of rules and regulations.

"You never take anything for granted because it's a long season, we're only 10 minutes into June, and all Mets fans know there's that trap door…but they have a nice lead in the division, they are a playoff team, and they know they can beat anyone."

For Steve and many other Mets fans, rebounding to salvage a series split with the juggernaut Dodgers was a telling sign that this season has a different feel to it, and that Showalter won't let his team fall into the depths of extended losing streaks like previous Mets teams knew all too well.

"Coming back after losing the first two games…was just so uplifting, and really gives you a lot of encouragement for the rest of the season," Steve said. "I think it has a lot to do with ownership, and you know if God forbid there's an injury to a key player between now and the trade deadline…they will go and get the kind of help they need."
