Pitch runner? Buck Showalter calls on Mychal Givens to run for Daniel Vogelbach

Buck Showalter surprised some on Monday night when the Mets loaded the bases with nobody out, and the manager called for a pinch runner for Daniel Vogelbach at first base.

The pinch runner was reliever Mychal Givens, who was in as the pitcher for the top half of the inning.

Should we call it a “pitch runner?”

By doing so, Showalter and the Mets forfeited their DH in Vogelbach, so when Givens was replaced on the mound by Joely Rodriguez in the top of the ninth, he was slated in the fifth spot in the batting order.

Givens did not come around to score, nor did he get to test his baserunning at all, as New York failed to push across a run despite having the bags full with no outs.
