Chris Bassitt's struggles continue with latest clunker: 'I'm beyond embarrassed'

Chris Bassitt looked like a big-time trade acquisition early in the 2022 season, pitching to an impressive 2.34 ERA over his first seven starts.

Things have trended sharply downhill since then, as Bassitt has posted an ERA north of 7.00 over his last five outings, most recently a dud in San Diego where he allowed seven hits and seven runs over 3.1 innings of work.

"I've never dealt with it," Bassitt said. "I'm beyond embarrassed. I'm really upset that I'm putting our bullpen guys in position to clean up the rest of the game."

New York needed a boost in the rotation once Max Scherzer hit the IL with an oblique strain, but that was just when Bassitt began to labor through one of the worst stretches of his career. The Mets will get a boost with Tylor Megill returning on Friday, but both Scherzer and Jacob deGrom won't be returning until likely next month, meaning the Mets could use the early-season version of Bassitt, who is trying to find his way out of this unfamiliar slump.

"It's something I've literally never went through," Bassitt said. "It's just get to work tomorrow and keep on keeping on. But to say it's frustrating would be a big-time understatement."
