Chris Bassitt takes full blame for Mets loss, but 'not trying to make this a bigger deal than it is'

The Mets had a chance to gain another game of separation from the Braves on Monday night, but instead, Chris Bassitt turned in one of his worst starts of the season in a 5-2 loss to the lowly Cubs.

New York’s bullpen held the fort, but the offense couldn’t do enough to bail out Bassitt, who lasted just 3.2 innings while allowing all five runs on the night.

It was the second shortest start of Bassitt’s debut season with the Mets, and he didn’t seem shocked at the result given how he was pitching.

“Not surprised,” Bassitt said. “I wasn’t locating anything.”

Bassitt, typically one of the team’s most reliable starters in a rotation that includes Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer, isn’t going to put much stock into Monday’s clunker, especially after pitching to a 2.32 ERA in his previous 14 starts.

“Just wasn't locating,” Bassitt said. “I'm not trying to make this a bigger deal than what it is. Just a bad start. Obviously, this entire game's on me. It's unfortunate, but just work my butt off and go to the next one.”
