The Mets' second-half slide has been sudden and drastic, but as it turns out, it has also been historic.
In a statistical nugget that the team wanted no part of, New York is now guaranteed to become the first team in MLB history to spend as many as 103 days in first place, only to finish the season with a losing record, according to the New York Post.
Those 103 days are the most ever for a team that finishes below .500, which the Mets are now destined to do after losing their 82nd game of the season on Sunday, the team's fifth straight loss and ninth of its last 10.
After finishing the first half of the season with a 48-40 record, the Mets have fallen on their faces in the second half, currently holding a record of 25-42 with seven games left to play. New York has won just twice in its last 12 games, after once holding first place in the NL East for nearly three straight months.

The Mets' collapse is a missed opportunity for a team that was looking to reach the postseason for the first time since 2016, as the first-place Braves currently hold just 83 wins, by far the lowest total by a first-place team in the league this year.
