Boomer: Mets reported clubhouse issues reflect poorly on Buck Showalter

According to a weekend report by Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets have dealt with some clubhouse discord this season, primarily noting an unnamed Met referring to Justin Verlander as a “diva,” and how he and Max Scherzer didn’t always see eye to eye.

Boomer and Gio believe these clubhouse issues are a reflection of the manager, and if this is what has been going on behind closed doors, if might be time for a new voice.

“If the clubhouse has got problems, that’s right at the manager’s feet,” Boomer said. “You have to manage people. Football coaches do that all the time, and they do it with three times as many players.

“I start to question - he’s an older baseball guy - but does he have the capability to hold players accountable and nip anything in the bud in the locker room where there’s a disjointed team that isn’t following what he wants? If that’s the case, he’s got to go.

“He’s been around, and we all love Buck Showalter for a lot of different reasons, but he’s never won. Maybe he’s never won because his message after a couple years starts to go by the wayside. If there’s a problem in the locker room, he’s gotta be the one to handle it.”

Gio agrees that Showalter could be gone after this season, but maybe he won’t be forced out. With the Mets in a period of transition, perhaps Showalter could look to manage elsewhere and try to chase down that elusive championship, and the two sides could mutually agree to part ways.

“Would he want to come back?” Gio said. “It doesn’t sound like 2024 is going to be a year where they have the same expectations as they had this year. If you’re Buck Showalter, at his age, do you want to come back?”
