It looks like Devin Williams is staying in New York and able to ‘take the train to the ballpark every day,’ but he will do so in a different borough.
As first reported by Will Sammon of The Athletic and later fleshed out by Jeff Passan, Williams and the Mets have agreed on a three-year deal that apparently guarantees Williams $51 million.
Passan says there are no opt-outs or options, and Jon Heyman further reports it’s a three-year, $45 million deal with a $6 million signing bonus prorated equally over three years, and $5 million in annual deferrals.
That base salary plus bonus total of $17 million is nearly double the $8.6 million the 31-year-old had in his lone year in the Bronx, an up-and-down season where he pitched to a 4.79 ERA overall and lost his closing role – but also had a 2.68 FIP, ranked near the top of the league in strikeout percentage, whiff percentage, and chase percentage, and, in his last 19 outings, allowed a .156 BAA and 0.89 WHIP with a 34/6 K/BB ratio in 18 innings.
His addition comes days after the Mets officially lost one member of their late-2025 bullpen, after Ryan Helsley signed with the Orioles over the weekend – but, per MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, the team is still interested in re-signing closer Edwin Diaz, as per his sources, “Williams is open to pitching in a setup role.”
