Many wondered if the Mets would make the bold move of designating Robinson Cano for assignment, despite being on the hook for just under $40 million through next season.
But this is a different Mets team with different ownership, and the team was willing to eat that money and keep Dominic Smith on the roster. On Tuesday morning, New York announced that Cano had been given the DFA, and with that, the struggling veteran infielder's Mets career could be over.
That was a reality that many on Mets Twitter widely celebrated, as Cano represented a frustrating trade from the previous regime, a large contract that wasn't nearly showing its worth in on-field production, and a full-season suspension for PED use in 2021.
