Boomer & Gio ponder Dominic Smith's future: 'Now I think maybe they should try to trade him'

Dominic Smith was given a vote of confidence when he was kept on the roster and Robinson Cano was designated for assignment last month, but now, the struggling first-round pick is back down in Triple-A with a Mets future as cloudy as it was before roster cuts in early May.

Smith, who has just six hits in his last 46 at-bats, is batting .186 on the year with a -0.1 WAR, and at nearly 27 years old, New York could decide that Smith may be better off elsewhere to unlock whatever he hasn't been able to consistently show in Queens.

Boomer thinks that could be the endgame the two sides are moving towards.

"Now I think maybe they should try to trade him," Boomer said during Tuesday's show. "But I really don't want them to, because later in the season, there could be more injuries.

"If he did play more, we'd probably see more from him. I understand the frustrations from Dom Smith…this is the time he needs to be showing he can play so he can make some real money as a baseball player."

According to SNY's Andy Martino, a source said "he'll be back" in reference to Smith, but he hasn't been able to find consistent at-bats this season and has struggled in the ones he has been given, and was in the center of trade talks before the season, specifically in a deal with the Padres that was ultimately squashed because of health concerns with Chris Paddack. Now, the Mets could look to deal Smith again, or hope that some time back in the minors will help him rediscover his swing. Boomer hopes it's the latter, but could also see New York electing to move on.

"It's a tough thing all around for everybody," Boomer said. "He'll either be back soon or they'll trade him. Maybe they want to get him more at-bats or get his confidence back…that could be part of this."
