Edwin Diaz is putting up numbers that are more dominant than his 57-save campaign in 2018, the year before he was dealt to the Mets in a blockbuster deal along with Robinson Cano.
But Tommy Lugauer says even if Diaz continues on this pace, if the Mets closer is on the mound in a tight game in October, he fully expects the Diaz of 2019 to return.
"I'll say this as long as they let me turn on a microphone here," Tommy said, filling in for Carton and Roberts during Friday's show. "Edwin Diaz, in a big spot in the postseason, is going to melt. It's gonna happen."
C-Mac pushed back on that given how overpowering Diaz has been in 2022, boasting a 1.73 ERA and 73 strikeouts in 36.1 innings of work. But Tommy has been burnt one too many times by previous New York closers, and doesn't see Diaz being any different if the Mets are in a pressure-packed playoff game.
"Do you want to run down the closer issues we've had?" Tommy said. "It has to do with the Mets and their closers. We have closer issues. Just like people have daddy issues, we have closer issues because name a closer, and they have spit the bit in a big spot. [Armando] Benitez, [Braden] Looper, [Billy] Wagner.
"I don't care about the stuff. The stuff is electric. [Jeurys] Familia's stuff was electric too, and look at what happened to him."
Loogy said he would rather see the Mets go out and get All-Star reliever David Bendnar from the Pirates, though Bednar's numbers (2.95 ERA, 56 strikeouts in 42.2 innings, 2.69 FIP) aren't close to what Diaz is doing in the Mets bullpen. Loogy acknowledges that, but it doesn't change the uneasiness that once it gets to October, there will be a different version of Diaz on the mound.
"I trust him this week, this month, he's been unbelievable," Tommy said. "I just don't trust him in a big spot. That's it."
