Boomer was railing a bit Thursday morning about Mets fans who aren't optimistic about 2024, as even Gio wondered what the Mets have done to deserve the benefit of the doubt…and if you were wondering where Sal Licata stands for some reason, well, rest easy.
"Of course I'm going to watch this season and root for the Mets and hope that they could do well, but the reality is, while certain things can come of this season, the most important thing is evaluating the young talent, because there's no chance that the Mets could go out there and compete for a division or a World Series," Sal said Thursday. "So what do you want me to do? You want me to get emotionally invested and be blind faith in the Mets thinking they could win? The Mets are why that would be stupid!"
"Yes!" was BT's response. "You do that in March! In June, you come back to reality, but you do it now."
Not in Sal's world.
"Do you think Steve Cohen or David Stearns really believes that this Mets team can win a World Series? Do you think this Mets team can do it?" Sal asked, and when BT said he thinks 'the Mets are gonna be horrendous,' Sal doubled down: "So then, why would I emotionally invest in this team?"
BT tried to play the 'you're a Mets fan' card, but Sal thinks fans should look to brighter days.
"For most baseball fans, it's about October, but for me, it's about November 2024. I'm more excited about November then October because the Mets can't do what I want them to do," Sal said. "I want to see a World Series win. The last one I saw, I just turned seven years old, and I know that this year is not gonna be a year where they can win a World Series. So I look ahead to next offseason, where I believe they will get back on track after Steve Cohen has learned the better way to build the team, and it will be the beginning of sustained success."
